A Simple Way to Learn from Everyone & Everything.

Oct 2020

The mindset of Kobe Bryant about studying and decision making.

Kobe Bryant Interview

In August 2019, Kobe replied to Patrick Bet-David as he was looking him in the eye:

“It’s a choice.”

While Kobe was specifically talking about his work ethic and why he did what he did, there is always a choice about every little detail in our lives as well. From the moment we wake up, we make countless of choices based on some superior goal. Sometimes these goals are well-thought about but mostly, we operate on habits.

Those habits are related to the way we see ourselves, our own visualization as a person. Beliefs we have, they are always self-fulfilling. We become what we think about.

What we learn, what we read, our content consumption. It all effects to our perspective. The social media noise can make it tricky to discover about something that matters for environment we have.

So a simple way to learn from the world around us, requires the description of what we want out of life. The shorter we can explain it, the better. As the progress to our self-described “Value” continues, there will be a lot of self reminders needed about why we chose this road.

When he was asked about how he edged over everybody else, Kobe answered with:

“Basketball for me was the most important thing. So everything i saw whether is TV shows, whether its books i have read & people I talk to. Everything was done to try learn how to become a better basketball player. Everything.”

With a precise goal in mind from his youth, Kobe also wanted everyone he is inspiring to be better. He believed in the ability to improve, and doing everything he can to achieve his value.

He expressed the Mamba Mentality as “ I don’t care who you are, where you’re from — it doesn’t matter. It’s having a focus and having a purpose. You wake up every single day to get better today than you were yesterday. Doesn’t matter what you are — basketball player, hockey player, golf player, painter, writer, doesn’t matter.”

Kobe Bryant Quote

Acquiring this mentality and making the choice comes down to one thing. Wanting it so bad that you cannot live without it. After that, the world becomes your library to master your craft. You start thinking everything as a product that serves people and solves problems. Attention to detail becomes a game you play in your mind. So you simply learn from everything around you.

It all starts with the choice.

Studying the game of basketball and learning everything he can about it; Kobe chose to be great.

So he did.

Rest in Peace Mamba.
